As homeschoolers, one of the most vital truths we can share with our children is the heart of the Gospel. The crucifixion isn’t just a historical event; it’s the ultimate act of love and sacrifice. This lesson will teach your children about the importance of the crucifixion. We’re going to focus on the veil tearing in the temple.

What was the Veil

The holy temple in Jerusalem was the center of Jewish religious life. The temple was a place where animal sacrifices were made. According to Hebrews 9:7, only the high priest was permitted to pass beyond this veil once each year. Which meant only high priest was allowed to enter God’s presence for all of Israel and make atonement for their sins. You can read Leviticus 16:1-2 for perfect description. In other words we were in need of high priest to go before us.

The significance of the veil tearing

After Jesus took his last breath, the ground shook, and the veil in the temple tore from top to bottom (Matthew 27:50-52). Why is this significant? The veil tearing meant that the high priest was no longer needed Jesus was now our way to God. (John 14:6). According to Hebrews 4:14-16 Jesus is now our high priest! God is for everyone now; the jew and the gentle! (Romans 1:6) We now all have the ability to cry out to God “Abba Father” (Romans 8:15). Jesus removed the barrier between man and God.

The homeschool lesson

supplies:
  • fabric
  • scissors
piece of purple fabric with little tear

Cut the fabric into small squares and add a little tear on the top of the fabric. I chose purple fabric because the veil had blue, purple, and scarlet threading (Exodus 26:31). Adding the tear to the fabric would make it easier for the children to tear.

The importance of the crucifixion

Have the children tear the fabric (veil) from top to bottom and scream, “Abba!” This is a simple way to remind us that no matter who we are, because of Christ, we are all adopted into the Kingdom.

Crucifixion Garden

Make a crucifixion garden with things you have at home and a few things from the dollar tree. You can also watch “The Lion of Judah” on Prime. This cartoon movie was great to finish the lesson!
