This is my first time using a curriculum. So far I am loving the curriculum and you can check it out here if you’ve been searching for one. Because the curriculum is designed for 1st graders, I’m using it as an inspiration and not a strict manual. I’ve been tweaking it to fit both my kindergartener (age 3) and 1st grader (age 6).
Supplies
- glue
- scissors
- magazine
- construction paper
- tape
Instructions
The grammar lesson this week was learning the definition of a noun. According to the curriculum, we should break down the definition of the noun by focusing on one thing at a time. This week focus is person.
I wasn’t sure if my kindergartener would grasp the lesson based on how the curriculum instructed. So the Holy Spirit gave me the idea to create photo collage. This would work the fine motor skills and make the lesson more tangible.
First we discussed what a noun is. A noun is a person, place, or thing. Then a gave an example of what a person is. After that short lesson we moved into the art lesson. I gave each child a magazine to search for a person. Once they found a person I would ripe the page out the magazine to make it easier for them to cut the photo.
Cutting tips for a younger child
For my 3 year old, I would draw a square around the photo for better instructions. I would also assist with holding the page. My 1st grader was able to do this part on his own.
After cutting the photo, they would glue the picture to their construction paper. I taped the photo collages on the wall for a constant visual through out the week. We will continue with At the end of the lesson I read a book and ask, “which one is a noun in this sentence, Dad or hi?” Once my kindergartener (age 3) said “dad” I knew she understood the assignment. Both my babies did great! Let me know how your kids do.
