Spring is a wonderful season to teach your homeschoolers about God’s creations and build curiosity in the world around them. These lessons are fun and educational! Check out these spring-themed homeschool lesson ideas with a few FREE printable activities.
1. Science: Life Growth and Plant Cycles
Lesson: Animal Life Cycles
Discuss the life cycles of animals (e.g., frogs, butterflies, or chickens).
Spring is here, the sound of frogs croaking has started filling the air! At my friend’s house, at the bottom of a hill, a lake becomes the hangout spot for frogs. The frogs sing in perfect harmony and fall silent together when the mood changes again. Frogs offer a fantastic learning opportunity for kids, providing a chance to explore their behavior and even discover whether any poisonous species are lurking nearby. Here is a fun FREE printable to go along with your frog lesson.

One year, my children and I studied the life cycle of butterflies. The lesson was brought to life when I purchased a butterfly kit. We saw the cycle from caterpillar to butterfly, then released them into a garden. Learning about the jobs of pollinators (e.g., butterflies, bees, or flies) would go great with a plant life cycle lesson.
Lesson: Flower Life Cycle
You can start growing sunflowers in the spring and they are great to go along with the lesson of God creating “seed-bearing” plants. Check out my lessons on Days of Creation to understand more about seed bearing plants. You can also buy a plant from your local nursery. All you need is a 5-gallon bucket, soil, and patience. So even if you have a small space you can still grow a mini garden.
2. Math: Spring-themed Math Activities
Lesson Topic: Spring Measurement Activities
Teach measurements using flowers, leaves, or insects. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the height of plants, the width of flowers, or the length of insects. Compare the length between insects (e.g. crickets vs ants) then study their importance.
Lesson: Graph
Another engaging lesson on measurement could be creating a spring-themed graph! Head out on a nature walk to collect leaves, flowers, sticks, and rocks. Then, use your findings to create a graph that shows which item you have the most of. To make it even more fun, feel free to incorporate one of these spring-inspired graphs!

Lesson: Shapes
Explore shapes in nature, such as the circles in a flower or the hexagon shapes in a honeycomb. Have children find the different shapes, 2D or 3D, outside, then practice drawing the shapes.
3. Art:
Lesson Topic: Flower or Leaf Rubbing
Teach about different types of flowers and leaves. Go on a nature walk to collect flowers and leaves. You’ll need a leaf/flower petal, a piece of paper, and a crayon or colored pencil. Place the leaf underneath the paper, making sure the veins and texture are facing up. Then, gently rub the side of the crayon or pencil over the paper.
As you rub, the pattern and veins of the leaf will appear on the paper, creating a beautiful textured print! You can experiment with different colored crayons and types of leaves to make unique rubbings. Experiment with adding charcoal to the mix to discover new textures and elevate the masterpiece. Here is an example.
4. Literacy: Spring Books and Blending
Lesson: Blending Words
Let’s practice blending these spring-themed sight words (e.g., Bug, bee, flower, sun, or rabbit).
Lesson: Syllables
Count the number of syllables in each spring-themed word. The children can clap, hop, or stomp as they count the syllables. Here are some spring-themed words:
- Bloom
- Flower
- Sun
- Rain
- Grow
- Tree
- Bird
- Butterfly
- Spring
- Leaf
- Sky
- Cloud
- Grass
- Warm
- Sunny
- Bunny
5. Social Studies: Earth Day
Lesson Topic: Earth Day
Earth Day is on April 22, 2025—an ideal time to teach the importance of caring for our planet. Keeping our Earth clean is essential for a healthy future. Take a walk around the neighborhood to pick up litter, and explore the vital role trees play in supporting our environment. What better way to discuss our planet’s care than under the shade of a tree? You can even have a picnic, making sure to clean up afterward, and leave the area as beautiful as you found it!
